Henrico Learner Profile Squads

Shady Grove Elementary School Squad Initiative—Global Citizens

12/5/19

This school year continues with a specific focus on the Henrico Learner Profile (HLP).  The HLP defines in a tangible way what a graduate of Henrico County Public Schools will be able to do as a new member of the broader community as a university level student, service member, or employee entering the workforce.  Six attributes are the main components that will lead to future ready citizens and include:  Quality Character, Global Citizenship, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration.  The highlight for this month’s article is Global Citizenship.

Roughly 1/6 of our school community members (both students and staff) are assigned to the Global Citizens Squad.  On a personal note, it is my pleasure as the principal to be a member of this incredible squad!  Our squad members will learn about all 6 characteristics stated above but will specialize on what it means to demonstrate global citizenship as a member of our local community.  Our HLP progression spells this trait out in simple language for the students to embrace with the following:  I serve as an active participant in a larger society.  I contribute to solutions that address the needs of a broader community by building global awareness and demonstrating empathy, compassion, and respect for fellow community members.

Quite a few of our school activities complement the focus on being a global citizen, particularly with the addition of our Chromebook initiative in grades 2-5.  Our curriculum includes intentional efforts to foster positive digital citizenship in the ways that our students and staff conduct themselves in a digital environment.  This leads to a healthy awareness of our individual digital footprint and online safety even at a very young age.  One fact that we can count on for our students as they move into the workplace is that their contributions to the broader community will have a wide geographic impact, maybe even across the globe.  We look forward to how the members of this squad will lead the way for the rest of the Cardinals as citizens of Shady Grove Elementary School.

Shady Grove Elementary School Squad Initiative—Quality Character

11/5/19

This school year has brought a specific focus on the Henrico Learner Profile (HLP). The highlight for this month’s article is Quality Character.

Roughly 1/6 of our school community members (both students and staff) are assigned to the Quality Character Squad.  These squad members will learn about all 6 characteristics stated above but will specialize on what it means to demonstrate quality character as a member of our local community.  Our HLP progression spells this trait out in simple language for the students to embrace with the following:  I inspire the trust of others and belief in myself to succeed.  I nurture overall physical and mental well-being, and practice honesty, integrity, and responsibility.  I manage and monitor myself and my learning, and persevere in the face of challenges.

Many of our recent school program initiatives support these student-centered statements at a high level.  The Cardinal Way was introduced several years ago to establish school wide expectations for what our school believes about character.  Our focus last year on Student Led Conferencing was a run away hit with children and their families.  The wellness focus that provides explicit learning about metacognition and grit fits strongly with the Quality Character progression statements.  We look forward to how the members of this squad lead the way for the rest of the Cardinals at Shady Grove Elementary School.
